Travelling with your dog or cat abroad has changed a lot post-Brexit and we understand the process can seem daunting. We're here to help make that process easier for you. Please read our guide below on how to acquire an Animal Health Certificate for travel.

As of 1st January 2021, pet passports issued in Great Britain are no longer valid for travel. Instead you will need to apply for an Animal Health Certificate to travel with your dog, cat or ferret from the UK to an EU country. Different rules will apply if you are travelling to a non-EU country and blood sampling & additional documentation may be required so please ensure you research this and allow enough time before travelling.

Animal Health Certificates must be used within 10 days of being issued and are valid for 4 months of onward travel between EU countries. You may travel with a maximum of 5 pets on the same certificate.

To apply for an Animal Health Certificate your pet must be microchipped and up to date with rabies vaccinations (NB-they must be at least 12 weeks old before they can be vaccinated). If your pet hasn’t been vaccinated against rabies before or their vaccine is overdue, you will need to wait 21 days after their rabies vaccine is given before an Animal Health Certificate can be issued.

Tapeworm treatment:
  • Leaving GB- tapeworm treatment is only required if you’re travelling directly to Finland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Norway or Malta. The treatment must have been given 24-120 hours before you arrive and it must be given by your vet & signed off in the relevant section of your AHC.
  • Returning to GB- a vet must treat your pet for tapeworm and record it in AHC no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours (5 days) before you enter Great Britain unless you are travelling directly from Finland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Norway or Malta.

Our Prices: For registered clients an Animal Health Certificate costs £150 (however if we have already issued you an AHC previously, we offer repeat AHCs at a discounted price of £100)
  • For non-registered clients an Animal Health Certificate costs £200
  • Rabies vaccination (lasting 3 years): £50
Please give us as much notice as possible when booking in for AHC appointments to allow us time to ensure your pet meets the requirements to travel to your designated country & to complete all the relevant paperwork.

Please note if your pet has a valid EU passport (not issued in Great Britain) and the rabies vaccines are up to date in this, then an Animal Health Certificate should not be necessary to travel. We are happy to double-check any paperwork for you if you are unsure of its validity.
